Artist Statement: The movie that I chose which inspired my work was The Little Mermaid.  At first, I wanted to demonstrate the fluidity, harmony, and bright colors associated with the motion picture I fell in love with as a child.  Upon doing more research about the original story however, I realized that Disney totally took a love/tragedy and made it into a "happily ever after," story to attract the younger audience.  I learned that the little mermaid actually sold her soul and her tongue to a witch who for in exchange, gave her a set of legs for which she could use to find and marry a royal sailor who the mermaid had saved previously from the dangerous oceans.  The circumstances were that if the mermaid could not make the prince fall in love with her and ask her hand in marriage, she would never earn a human soul, would die of a broken heart, and turn into sea foam.  This dark story is what inspired me to create a fluxus box which depicts the story of The Little Mermaid as a whole.  That is why I used texture and bright color as the elements demonstrated on the outside of the box.  This represents what everyones thought are on the story: happy, and bright.  The inside however, represents the children's story for what it really is: dark and depressing.
